Why should I buy my boat from Bates Wharf?


As a family run business established over a 100 years ago here at Bates we provide a professional & friendly service from start to finish, our boats are presented in a clean and tidy condition, and are kept warm in the winter!

Can I try a boat before buying it?


Yes we normally demonstrate the boat of interest where possible, if it is a sports boat on a trailer then we would usually require a small refundable deposit subject to a satisfactory demonstration

Will I need to survey the boat?


As a broker we always recommend you have a hull and engine survey for peace of mind. The hull surveyor will provide you with a detailed report on the boat and her condition. We also advise you have a qualified engineer to survey the engines.

Do I need a licence to drive my boat?


No not in the UK, however you would require an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for the continent and we are more than happy to provide you with sea school information.

Will my boat need a licence?


Only if you are using your boat on the River, on a new boat you get issued from the selling dealer a Certificate Of Conformity that you can provide to the Environment Agency and they will then provide you with a River Licence. If your boat is more than 4 years old you will require a Boat Safety Certificate this can be provided by a Marine surveyor, or call us for advice.

Do you teach me to drive the boat?


Yes, on the day of your handover we make sure you feel totally confident with how everything works and give extensive handling tuition.

Will my boat depreciate?


Depending on condition, minimal. Used prices are calculated on replacement cost at the time of sale.

Why should I sell my boat through Bates Wharf?


We have an experienced team of sales people who are here to make the selling process as easy as a possible, once your boat arrives we ask you to fill out an Instructions to Sell form with details of the boat, when approved by you we then produce the specification with the details provided. It is then advertised on our website, Yachtworld.com and in the most popular boating magazines. Once an offer has been accepted we can speed up the selling process by organising demonstrations, surveys and any additional work required.

What percentage do you charge?


10% on the first £20,000, 8% on the balance plus vat @ 17.5%.

Do you advertise my boat, if so where?


Yes, we advertise on our website, the Yachtworld.com website and all major boating magazines i.e Motor Boats Monthly, Boats & Yachts and Sportsboat. In both offices and all mail enquires.

Will my boat be kept clean?


Yes, we clean the boats on a regular basis. If your boat requires a valet for sales purposes prior to arriving, quotations are available on request.

Do you charge for storage whilst my boat is for sale?


We provide you with 3 months free of charge and £15 per metre per month thereafter in arrears.
